Owners of family-run and privately owned businesses will now be able to pass on £2.5m (each) of their companies from April 2026 without their beneficiaries paying Inheritance Tax under new government plans
This follows a change to the proposed £1m, fought heavily by farmers across the UK. The change applies to farms and businesses and will be introduced through the Finance Bill in early 2026.
Spouses and civil partners will be able to combine their allowances, meaning up to £5 million in qualifying business assets or farms can be passed on without an Inheritance Tax charge.
The government says the change responds to concerns from farmers and business owners and is aimed at supporting business continuity, protecting jobs and family-run operations while ensuring the largest estates still contribute.
For businesses and farms worth more than £2.5m per shareholder, inheritance tax at 20% (half the normal rate of 40%) will apply.
